Welcome to the swlines rolling stock section, in this section we detail each train (or locomotive) that operated our covered routes since approximately 2000. We plan to go further back over time

Class 158 'Super Sprinter'

Class 158 "Super Sprinter" (11 units)
Routes operated: Salisbury to Romsey via Redbridge and Swaythling
Capacity: 114 standard in 2+2 formation, 13 first in 2+2 (127 total)
Location of first class: Situated at one end of the train
Length: 2 23m long coaches

These units are small long distance coaches, and can be found on Salisbury to Romsey via Southampton Central shuttles, as well as some Southampton Central to Portsmouth Harbour shuttles.

Class 159 'Super Sprinter'

SWT: Class 159 "Super Sprinter" (22 /0 units, 8 /1 units)
Routes operated: All West of England line services (including Bristol)
Capacity: 172 standard in 2+2 formation, 23 first in 2+2 (195 total)
Location of first class: Normally at London end of unit
Length: 3 23m long coaches

Although not strictly on the SWML, the class 159s operate the West of England line services between London and Bristol, Exeter, Paignton & Plymouth.

Class 421 3-CIG

SWT: Class 421 3-CIG (2 units, based at Bournemouth depot)
Routes operated: Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier
Capacity: 128 standard in 3+2, 36 first in compartments (164 total)
Location of first class: Either end of the train
Length: 3 20m long coaches

Preserved by South West Trains and refurbished at Wimbledon Park depot, these units operate the community line between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier.

Class 444 Desiro

SWT: Class 444 "Desiro" (45 units)
Routes operated: London to Weymouth, London to Poole
Capacity: 299 standard in 2+2 formation, 35 first in 2+1 (324 total)
Location of first class: Closest towards London end of train
Length: 5 23m long coaches

These units are the primary units on the London to Weymouth route, as well as covering routes into Portsmouth Harbour additionally. These units replaced the class 442 'Wessex Electric' units on the route.

Class 450 'Desiro'

SWT: Class 450 "Desiro" (127 units, some 'HiDensity')
Routes operated: London to Poole, some services to Weymouth
Capacity: 246 standard in 3+2 formation, 24 first in 2+2 (270 total)
Location of first class: 2nd coach towards London end of train
Length: 4 20m long coaches

These units are primarily for short distance suburban work, however they may be formed of a longer train (ie, London to Poole). On London to Poole services, a change will generally result in a faster journey time.

Class 458 Juniper

SWT: Class 458 "Juniper" (30 units)
Routes operated: London to Reading and Aldershot, Guildford to Ascot
Capacity: 250 standard in 3+2 formation, 24 first in 2+2 (274 total)
Location of first class: Located either end of 4-coach unit.
Length: 4 20m long coaches

These units are based at Wimbledon Park depot although mostly are outstabled overnight. These units replaced slammers, and then class 450s, on the Reading suburban lines.

Class 220 'Voyager'

CrossCountry: Class 220 'Voyager' (34 units + 24 5-car tilting 'Super Voyagers')
Routes operated: Penzance / Plymouth / Bournemouth - the north
Capacity: 162 standard in 2+2 formation, 26 first in 2+1 (188 total)
Location of first class: Located by yellow strap on buffer beam, either end
Length: 4 23m long coaches

These units are long distances units and operate Arriva's CrossCountry services between Bournemouth and the north (primarily Manchester from December 2008).

FGW: Class 142 'Pacer' (12 units, 5 on short lease)
Routes operated: Barnstaple to Exeter, Exmouth to Paignton
Capacity: 121 total in standard class. No first class accomodation.
Length: 2 16m long coaches

These units, transferred from First North Western in late 2007, are operating on the 'West' Exmouth to Paignton and Barnstaple to Exeter routes.

FGW: Class 143 'Pacer' (8 units)
Routes operated: Local services in the Bristol area
Capacity: 106 total in standard class. No first class accomodation.
Length: 2 16m long coaches

The class 143 units operate local services in the Bristol area, and are used on limited 'longer distance' suburban services.

Class 150 'Sprinter'

FGW: Class 150 (19 units, 2 /1s subleased and 17 /2s)
Routes operated: Local services in the Bristol area
Capacity: to be confirmed.
Length: 2 20m long coaches

These units supplement the class 143s around the Bristol area.

Class 450 'Desiro'

FGW: Class 153 (12 units)
Routes operated: Across the FGW 'West' network
Capacity: 72 total in standard class. No first class accomodation.
Length: single 23m coach.

The class 153s were converted from class 155 units built by BREL in 1987. They operate any of the Devon branches as well as local services in the Westbury area.

Class 158 'Sprinter' - First Great Western

FGW: Class 158 (21 units)
Routes operated: Across the FGW 'West' network
Capacity: 136 total in standard class. No first class accomodation.
Length: two 23m coaches, except 158 798, which is three 23 coaches.

The class 158s primarily operate on Bristol to Penzance and Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour and Brighton services. They also help to supplement other services.

FGW: Class 43 and Mk3 stock ('High Speed Train')
Routes operated: All mainline intercity routes out of London Paddington
Capacity: to be confirmed.
Length: to be confirmed (depends on factors).

The First Great Western HST fleet, recently refurbished to provide a 'better ambience' and re-engined with new environmentally friendly engines to extend the HSTs life, operates all intercity services out of London Paddington, except former Thames Valley services.

Class 180 'Adelante'

FGW: Class 180 (12 units)
Routes operated: London to Oxford (and beyond), London - Bristol and Exeter.
Capacity: 226 standard in 2+2 formation, 42 first in unknown formation. 16 tip up seats.
Length: five 23m coaches.

The class 180 fleet, soon to be withdrawn from service with the introduction of refurbished high speed trains, operates few services in the Great Western region. They can primarily be found on shorter distance intercity routes.
